New Athletic Director and Head Football Coach
Joseph Gutilla has been named the new Athletic Director of the Kateri Catholic School System and Head Football Coach of Cardinal Stritch High School. The Kateri Catholic School System includes Cardinal Stritch High School in Oregon, Sacred Heart and St. Thomas Aquinas Schools in Toledo and St. Jerome School in Walbridge.
"We are pleased to welcome Mr. Gutilla to the Stritch family," says Father David Reinhart, president of the Kateri Catholic School System. "He brings years of experience in Catholic high schools similar to our own. He exhibits the professionalism, faith, and talent that we come to expect from our administrators and coaches."
Mr. Gutilla most recently was the assistant varsity football coach at Columbus Academy in Gahanna, OH. He also served as head football coach at Benilde-St. Margaret's School in Saint Louis, Park, MN. During his tenure at Benilde-St. Margaret's School, he turned the football team into two-time conference champions with five straight winning seasons. Similarly, as coach at Trinity High School in New Hampshire, Mr. Gutilla led the football team to Class L Division 2 state semi-finals two years in a row. He also served as defensive coordinator at Sonoma State University where he directed the defense to its highest rank (second) in the Northern California Athletic Conference.
"I'm looking forward to joining the Cardinal Stritch High School family," says Mr. Gutilla. "I want the students to understand the "big picture" in sports. We start by building a strong foundation, teaching the students the fundamentals, and making sure they have a good time. Winning is a byproduct of that strong foundation."
"My training includes physical training, study time, and character education," he explains. "I try to teach the athletes more about attitude, leadership, and responsibility so that they better understand what they can do and what they can become with the right attitude."

Cardinal Stritch High School Named One of Top 50 Catholic High Schools in the Nation for Third Consecutive Year
For the third consecutive year, Cardinal Stritch High School has been named one of the best 50 Catholic High Schools in the United States by the Catholic High School Honor Roll. Cardinal Stritch High School is the only Catholic high school in Ohio to receive the honor this year. The award recognizes Catholic high schools that excel in academics, Catholic identity and civic education.
In its five years, the Honor Roll has seen over 50 percent of America's nearly 1,300 Catholic high schools participate at least once. This year nearly 300 schools completed the three detailed surveys that measure a school's adherence to the Church's educational mission.
"At Cardinal Stritch High School, our motto is "Disciples First," says Father David Reinhart, president of Stritch. "Our teachers, staff, parents, and students make stewardship a way of life. That is our Catholic identity and it reflects in our civic education and the academic excellence we strive for."
"To be named one of the best Catholic high schools in the nation three years in a row validates the emphasis we place on stewardship coupled with academic excellence," says Timothy Mahoney, principal of Cardinal Stritch High School. "At Stritch, educating students means integrating our faith and spiritual formation into everyday activities. We invite everyone who is part of the Stritch family to use their brains, creativity, time, and skills to maintain this level of excellence."
"We've tried to create an environment at Stritch that is life-changing and life-enhancing," says Mahoney. "It's an honor to be recognized for something we believe in so strongly."
To celebrate the award, Cardinal Stritch High School will hold a special assembly on Friday, November 7, at 2:15 p.m. in the school gym.

Faculty and Staff at Cardinal Stritch High School Focus on Giving Back
The teachers and staff at Cardinal Stritch High School will roll up their sleeves during their annual retreat on October 31, and practice what they teach-stewardship. Rather than spending the day listening to a motivational speaker, the 45 teachers and staff members will serve meals, sort food donations, and help to clean at Helping Hands of St. Louis and the Cherry Street Mission.
"We teach our students that we are stewards, rather than owners, of the gifts that we receive from God," says Father Reinhart. "We are accountable to God as to how we use those gifts."
"Stewardship is a way of life that we talk about, encourage and live," he says. "The faculty and staff at Cardinal Stritch High Schools chose to spend their retreat helping others as a way to lead by example."
Cardinal Stritch High School was the first area Catholic high school to launch a stewardship initiative, called "Live It" in 2006.
"On a daily basis, we try to focus on the 3-G's of stewardship-All is God's, Gratitude, and Generosity," Father Reinhart says.
The faculty retreat will begin with a prayer service at Cardinal Stritch High School at 8 a.m. The faculty and staff will work at Helping Hands of St. Louis and the Cherry Street Mission from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The retreat will conclude at Cardinal Stritch High School.

With 115 pair of feet, lots of rock and roll, a little bit of country, and some jazz thrown in, the Cardinal Stritch High School gymnasium will be hopping and bopping all night long on Saturday, Oct. 18. The school is hosting its first Dance-a-Thon beginning at 7 p.m. on Saturday and ending at 10 a.m. Sunday.
The Dance-a-Thon will help raise money for the Cardinal Stritch High School Music Department's spring music trip to Disney World.
"Over one third of the Cardinal Stritch student body has signed up to participate in the Dance-a-Thon," says Tracy Fahim, music director at Cardinal Stritch. Father David Reinhart will lead the students in Mass in the gymnasium at 7 p.m. on Saturday. All-night dancing and activities will begin at 8 p.m. The festivities include "Dance, Dance Revolution," games, raffles, and door prizes donated by parents and areas businesses.
Throughout the evening, instructors will teach the students group dances and will host an aerobics class on Sunday morning. Snack and beverages will be served during the event followed by breakfast on Sunday morning.
"The spring music trip to Disney World is the culmination of a year of hard work and performances," says Mrs. Fahim. Music students will attend dance clinics and workshops, host performances and enjoy sight seeing and programs during their Disney World Trip.
